JAY MYERS
...aka AX, JAX, AXEL, JAXEL, JAXAL, JAY, JAM... Born in Alert Bay;
his father a Norwegian fisherman, his mother a part aboriginal,
was encouraged from an early age, express himself by drawing.
Being mostly self taught Jay uses more than just acrylic paints when he paints
and uses found objects for his collages and assembleges. He attended art classes at
Malaspina University for a year, but decided to leave because he felt limited
by the constraints of what was being taught and presented in class.
Following his own path, Jay beleives that art should be constantly
re-defined. His goal is to keep the audience guessing and thinking about
what other things that might be present in his pieces the universe. The
witt, and cheekiness of cubist and expressionist art really lends itself to the
statements and humour apparent in his work.
Jay has shown his art up and down Vancouver island. Jay is looking for a physical
location to start a "Modernist Movement" on Vancouver Island called "SMO"
(Moving the Modernist Movement). With the combined efforts of Jay and Irene
and her upcoming web company "IAN" will be driving this movement island wide
and hopefully move across Canada. This movement will hopefully educate the
public more about alternative modernist art.
